Yes, snow. Always a good time. We still have the responsibility to produce good work, even when we are freezing our asses off.

Its a great idea to show clients great shots as you take them. It builds their confidence, and it re-assures them that you are getting some great photos.

Sometimes you have to go places you may not want to to get the shot.

We'll be posting some more pics from Lindsay and Mike's session a bit later this week. Their Animoto video will follow shortly.

Megan and Jeff

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share with all of you our latest engagement session. Chris and I got a chance to hang out with Megan and Jeff at our alma mater, Bowling Green State. We had a blast even though it was a bit cold outside. As a photographer, you may not always have the weather on your side, but it's your ability to adapt for any situation that forces you to get creative with your lighting, posing, what-have-you.

Megan and Jeff both met each other at Bowling Green, and their wedding is actually taking place in the campus chapel. It's a very cool location because of the abundance of 100-year old trees located around the chapel. Megan and Jeff also wanted to create some cool "Save-the-Date" invitations for family and friends, so we shot a series of "photobooth" style photography for them to use. They appear at the end of their engagement video.

While I have the opportunity to write, I wanted to tell you about a funny story that happened that day. Chris and I were both shooting with d300's, and Chris had the 24-70mm lens, and I had the 70-200mm lens. David, one of our up and coming shooters wanted to lend us a hand with the shoot, so as he was assisting, he went to look over my shoulder at what I was shooting. As he bent over, there was a bit of a ripping sound, which I didn't hear, but he swears to (sorry Dave), followed by a look of surprise and suspense. David then proceeded to wear a jacket around his waist all day. This was all pretty funny throughout the day because the rip in his pants was literally a good 6-8 inches in length. Little did David know that the majority of our shoot would be spent walking from one end of campus to the other, which could total up to almost a mile each way. So, this is my opportunity to embarrass Dave, which I so rarely have the opportunity to do, but a good story nonetheless.

Angels on the 1st

Hey everyone. Shot some more angels this weekend, and thought I would share some of the images. A word to the wise about shooting this type of subject, buy knee pads. These angels, and other statues are sometimes very small, requiring you to get very low to the ground, which can be quite uncomfortable at times. Also, if the ground is wet, you'll have to walk around with a big wet spot on your pants...trust me, I know from experience.

Trash the Dress (The Long Awaited Video)

Ha. This is a long awaited video! I can honestly say that this particular shoot was probably my favorite for Kaufman Kramer thus far because it was such a departure for us in terms of photography. We got a chance to work with Erica and Danny, (featured in this video) who are absolutely wonderful to work with. They're daring, and completely open to new ideas and pushing the envelope.

So, a little background history about this session. During the summer, we sponsored a mini-Kaufman Kramer Photography Weekend, and the idea was to work with each other and our friends on different types of lighting. The weekend culminated in a "Trash the Dress" session with Erica and Danny. This session was split into two different areas. First, we wanted to shoot on a beach, and since there are SO many beaches here in Ohio, well... you get the idea. We had to get creative on where to go and how to pull it off. The second part of their session was shot at a park in Mansfield, as well as Mohican State Park. I think that when you check out their photography, you'll see a great blend between the edgy, high-contrast photography we love, and the dynamic "on-location" lighting we are starting to specialize in.

Erica and Danny, thank you so much for your patience with us as we put together all of your photography! (They've been waiting a month for their "Trash the Dress" shots) I just wanted to make sure you got the most mileage out of your online account. :) The two of you were a blast to work with, and we can't wait to shoot the wedding!

Hi everyone! Brad and I got a chance to shoot with Danielle and Ryan down in Westerville a week ago and we put together a video to show you some of the best shots from the shoot. Danielle and Ryan are getting married on December 27th at a beautiful location in Sunbury. To complement their choice in venue, we thought it would be fun to mix things up a bit and try a downtown/metro shoot.

It was interesting to hear that Danielle and Ryan didn't really have many photos of themselves together, so of course, we aimed to provide an abundance of great photography. It's always very interesting to me to see a couple loosen up in front of the camera and really lose themselves in the moment. After shooting with Brad and I for 20 minutes or so, Danielle and Ryan started to just run with it and it was easy to capture the magic from there. That's what I love about our engagement sessions; they give us chance to let the couple be themselves and for us to establish a great relationship before the wedding day. Enjoy the photos!

Chris and I had the opportunity to work with a fantastic couple this weekend up in Lansing Michigan. I have to admit, it's a shame that I didn't get a chance to visit the campus of Michigan State University before choosing a college, because I'm pretty sure that this was one of the most scenic campuses I've ever been to.

Jen and Bryce met at MSU, so we decided to capture the first part of their story on campus. We got a chance to do some really great work with them. Very at ease, and definitely into each other. (wink)

We also got a chance to shoot in downtown Lansing at the State Capitol building. The light was pouring in through the brilliant fall colors and I think we were able to capture some of our best engagement work yet.

Amie and Jon were a fantastic couple to work with. They spent a great of time focusing on the details that Kaufman Kramer loves to capture! We also got a chance to work with another wonderful photographer named Sangeeta Kumar. She was able to bring a very different perspective to the wedding day. Sometimes all you need is a woman's touch. (wink)

This was a weekend when the KKP crew was split in Marion, Ohio and Lapeer, Michigan. While having all 3 full time shooters provides a level of comfort for us, we find that some of our most creative photography comes when we are pushed outside the comfort zone. A welcome feeling for sure.

Kaufman Kramer's Photography Weekend Part 3

The next shoot we set up was a commercial photography shoot where we could play with how to control light. The idea was to set up a "Joe McNally" style shoot where the subject is lit in the foreground and the background carries on the story. This is a common real-world situation where a client will ask for a promotional piece and you have to work quickly.

The next type of photography we wanted to do was sports photography. Now, we don't have any 400mm lenses... yet...(wink) but the idea was to place ourselves in a position to capture emotion and the story of the day.

Xoran Trip to Detroit Tigers Game

Hey everyone. Just thought that I would mention that Xoran had our end of summer event. We went to the Detroit Tigers game today at Comerica Park. It was my first time there, and it was pretty fun. Even though the Tigers lost...horribly. And we had to sit in rush hour traffic for more than an hour. But it was fun.

Unexpected Details

Hi everyone. I just took a quick glance through some photos from a recent wedding I second shot on, and I thought I would write a quick blog post about getting those unexpected shots at a wedding. When I am shooting details, I like to look for shots that the client might never expect (like these two photos). When you show them stuff like this, they usually ask you "where was that?!". I think its cool to be able to produce stuff that helps to tell the story of the couple, but can also stand on its own as an individual piece. I think the second one would make a great canvas print : )

Here are a few images from Courtney and Jeremy's wedding this past Saturday. Brad and I had a wonderful time shooting it, and fun was had by all. We were able to take advantage of some great locations, as you can see. I'll be editing the event in the next few weeks, and you'll be able to see the event on Pictage once I'm done.

For all the photogs out there, I'll be editing this one using Aperture. We'll see how it works out. From what I've seen so far I am able to get the same results as I would in Lightroom.

Trip to Pinehurst, Day 2

Well, I'm done with the exhibiting for today, so I'll take this opportunity to blog about our switch from Willowbook's Sequoia Album to our new Leather Craftsmen Albums. I've been wanting to do this for a while now. When we first started with Pictage, they were really pushing these Sequoia albums. Everything looked pretty good, so we ended up ordering a studio sample for ourselves. We prefer the 10x13 horizontal album, and we got that size with black leather.

I have to say, when the album first came in, I was VERY impressed. The quality of the prints, the softness and the smell of the leather, and the craftsmanship all looked great. Fast forward one year, and you won't find a bigger advocate AGAINST purchasing a Willowbook. There are several reasons why I feel this way...

The long term quality of the album is beyond unacceptable. Its atrocious, its horrible, its just downright RUDE to offer a product like this to photographers. Our album pages look like CRAP. The pages are warping like I've never seen. Some of the prints are separating from the page backings. The worst part is that we haven't abused the album. The album is in our office 80% of the time, and the other 20%, its kept in its original box, wrapped in bubble wrap. How much more careful can we be?

Another beef I have with Willowbook is that they are exclusive to Pictage, therefore limiting my design choices. I can only use Pictage's album designer to lay out the album, which honestly, needs major improvements before it is even usable. One of the main reasons that we are switching to LC is because we have full and total control over the design and layout of the album. And anyone who knows me understands how much I like to have control of our products and services.

On to the positive part of this post. We are switching to Leather Craftsmen albums. These guys are a top-notch, first-class operation, and they've been doing custom bookbinding pretty much forever. I initially got turned on to LC through two sources, Becker, and Rick Rosen. Becker mentioned his happines with LC products on the [b] school, and I was able to talk to Rick at the Detroit PUG (Pictage Users Group) meeting. Both guys had nothing but great things to say, so I had to check them out. After contacting an sales rep, and devouring all of the info on their website, I was convinced.

The marketing materials and samples that we were sent gave me virtually every piece of information that I needed to get started. I had a few additional questions so I called LC. A very nice lady answered the phone and was more than happy to help me. At my current job at Xoran Technologies, customer service is one of the ways that we differentiate ourselves from our competitors, and naturally its VERY important to me. When I say that LC has good customer service, that means a lot.

I can't wait to get our first LC album. I really think its going to help us take things to the next level.

Never fear, I wouldn't leave everyone hanging with no photography. This is one of the panoramic shots that I did today. There is a two mile nature trail going around a lake by my parent's place down here.

Trip to Pinehurst, Day 1

Hey everyone, I made it to my gate (A23). Detroit Airport really isn't all that bad. For the most part, things were clearly marked and airport security and staff were helpful. As I'm sitting at the gate waiting to board, I am contemplating why airports cannot offer free wi-fi connections to passengers. I don't want to pay $5 for an hour of internet. I want it for free. Airlines, if you want more passengers, and you want to increase business, you have to offer perks to passengers. If you can't cut costs anywhere else, at least give us free wi-fi.

I made it through security with no issues, which was kind of surprising because I had a camera bag with me. When Steve and I flew into Orlando, we had the photo backpack with plenty of gear...and it was thoroughly searched. Not even a wink this time from the TSA personnel. Is it because I have less gear this time? Hopefully.

I also saw one of those new "ion" scanners that blast passengers with short bursts of air. I didn't have to go through one, but it was funny to watch each person jump as they were startled by the sudden blasts of air.

On the plane now, and heading to RDU. We should arrive there at 11:45ish. no word from the captain yet as to when the exact time will be, but the flight is on time. It looks like we might actually get a beverage and some pretzels on this flight, which would be very appreciated right now. Yay, beverage cart is coming down the isle. Aww, it looks like the cups actually got smaller than the last time I flew, no good. More later.

Hi Guys. This comment got pretty buried, and we never featured it on the blog, so I'm putting it up front and center (because we are pretty proud of it). This was a comment posted on our blog by Melanie Fullenkamp...

THANK YOU SO MUCH from one BEYOND HAPPY mother of the bride! Kaufman Kramer Photography is amazing, truly inspired, high-energy work I am thrilled to have witnessed! (And I haven't even seen all the wedding photos yet.)

They so far exceeded our expectations that I am sharing the site with everyone who asks about the wedding (and even some who don't).

These photographers amazed EVERYONE at our ceremony and reception, as well as before, between and after. The bride and groom are thrilled to be friends with and even more excited to now have worked with kaufmankramer.com

At the reception we were able to catch a glimpse of their work from the ceremony and from earlier in the day on a laptop displayed for those attending the party to enjoy. Those photos alone have me so eager to see more. Another laptop shared their engagement photos.

Chris and Brad, you were OUTSTANDING, just like Renae kept telling me you are! I never worried. . . she was SO excited about having hired you and now I am, and many others, are big fans as well.

The day of the wedding they worked so hard. They were flying (literally) all over the place to capture the event in a unique and creative way. They are TRUE ARTISTS and totally blew away the concept of traditional wedding photography in my mind. They made the wedding party look like models!

Being very interested in photography and enjoying it as a hobby myself, I wondered how they got such perfect, candid shots of unrepeatable moments. Then I heard one of the photographers shooting next to me. He took about a half dozen rapid photos of one part of the cake cutting and I realized how fortunate these guys are to work in this digital age of photography.

Having been in the event planning, wedding and marketing business for many years myself, I can tell you that these guys are succeeding because they are willing to go the extra mile, care deeply about their clients, and are over-the-top passionate about their work. I didn't see them stop to eat or linger anywhere for one minute. (Tell me, what is your favorite brand of power bar, guys? )

PRICELESS is the one word I will use to describe the work of these guys and the impact they have already had on our once-in-a-lifetime event. I have a feeling we'll be working together again in the future.

Here are a few more images from last weekend. Brad and I had a great time hanging out and making some cool images. When we went to balloonfest, I tried something new I never had before. I walked around with a fisheye on a D70s and shot from the hip. I purposefully didn't bring the camera to my eye. I just wanted to see what I could get. The picture of the boy in the wagon, and the girls dancing were taken using this technique. I was trying to be aware of my environment and when I thought that there might be a moment, I would click the shutter. Having the fisheye certainly helped because I didn't have to be exactly dead on with composition. 80% of the photos did not turn out. Missed focus, blurry, backlit, etc... but the ones that did are pretty cool I think.

I'm not that good at driving a manual, but I'm trying to learn!

My Cousin Amanda's Reception

The great thing about going to a family member's wedding / reception is that you can enjoy yourself without having to feel like you're under the gun.

I was able to take a few shots while walking around. Note: I was trying my best not to be "that guy" at the reception. You know...the guy who shows up with the HUGE camera and trys to one-up the professional? (We've all been there)

Hey everyone. I'm out here in San Diego, California for a wedding I don't have to shoot! Relaxation? What's that? (wink) It's always great to spend some time with family and get away from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. However, I wouldn't be a good photographer if I didn't at least do some shooting out here. So, here's a few shots that I took when out with the family.

I typically like to shoot the early evening downtown cityscape type of shots, but sometimes you have to work in mid-day sun with the family. The trick to good photography is to find the beauty in everyday things. It may not be interesting to everyone, but if it's interesting to you...take the shot. I think that many photographers (myself included) sometimes get into the mindset that you need perfect lighting, or you have to wait for the "magic hour". The challenge is to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Ask Jay Maisel! Check out his web site:

Hey everyone. We'll be in Lima, Ohio this weekend, shooting the wedding of Rachel and Ryan. It will be Steve, Dave, and myself on this one, and we'll sure try and shoot some more video for you guys. From the research we've done into the venues, it looks like we will be shooting inside a pretty interesting church. From what I hear, there is a LARGE set of windows directly above the altar, leading me to believe that there will be lots of natural light, which always makes our job that much easier. We'll be trying out some of the techniques we learned from David Ziser's classes on Kelbytraining.com this weekend, and we'll be sure to share those images on the blog. Ok so we might not be teaching any classes at Kelbytraining.com (yet...) but we did manage to sneak into the wrap-up video from this years Photoshop world in Orlando, FL. I was watching this series and came across a few fleeting frames in this video.

By the way, for any of you photographers or designers out there not using Kelbytraining.com for your online training and continuing education, GET WITH THE PROGRAM! This site is a tremendous resource for today's photography and design community. I also can't emphasize enough the importance of this resource to students. Don't waste your valuable class time learning the programs, do it online.

Recent wedding...that we didn't shoot!

Hey all, I actually got to go to a wedding and not shoot for once! I'm not saying that I don't enjoy shooting, but every once in a while, its nice to sit back and let someone else do the job. Here are a couple pics I snapped with my Fuji F50fd.

I've had a few questions recently regarding mileage, and I thought it would be a good idea to address this issue on the blog. Many photographers struggle with the idea of charging for mileage, and while it is a business decision you have to make, there are obvious positives and negative to this.

Currently, we are listed as being Ashland Photographers, Columbus Photographers, even Ann Arbor photographers, due to our locations for shooters. However, how do we decide when to charge for mileage and when not to? For us, it all comes down to a base of operations. If we can drive from Ashland, Columbus, or Ann Arbor to a location within 50 miles of one of those cities, then we can usually save on hotel costs since we can get back to "base" relatively quickly. We like to pass those savings onto our clients.

Many photographers will also make the decision to always charge for mileage regardless of distance, simply because the cost of fuel has gone up so high. This of course is the question that you have to ask yourself. Do you eat the cost, or don't you? Kaufman Kramer has always strived to provide top level service to all of our clients, and if we can help them by taking up some of these internal costs, then we're going to do that.

Of course, I say this while gas is around $4.00 a gallon. We'll see how we feel when it hits 6 bucks. (For all those brides out there, I wouldn't worry... We'll make sure to get to your location no matter what.) Just something on my mind that I thought other photographers would be curious about. ;)

Hey everyone. The Kaufman Kramer guys were split up this past weekend on two very fun shoots. First, Chris and Brad were out in Wapakoneta, Ohio shooting Renae and Paul's wedding, which turned out to be pretty exciting considering the video you're about to watch.

Steve, Chris W. and Dave were out shooting Brooke and Russel's wedding in Wooster, Ohio. Brooke and Russel had a fantastic ceremony and both families were VERY fun to work with. It's easy to shoot great photos when everyone feels relaxed with their photographers. We also had a bit of downtime for the girls to send out some shout outs to the bride. All in all, a great day for our couples, and a great day for Kaufman Kramer.

Leslie Park Golf Course

Hey all. I went shooting Sunday evening and happened to walk by the Leslie Park Golf Course, which is probably 5 minutes from my apartment. I've heard lots of good things about Photoshop CS3's new and improved Photomerge feature and decided to try to shoot a pano, but handheld. Sounds weird I know, but damn if it didn't work.

Hi everyone. I wanted to write a quick post about clients putting photography up on social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. I don't really have a problem with this, because obviously they love the photos enough to do so! The best part is, when one of our clients puts up some of their wedding photographs, ALL of their friends see that they have done so through notifications. This is a huge marketing tool for us, and it is a great way to bring in new business through referrals (which is what are business is based on now, we do NO advertising).

I have to admit, at first I wasn't too happy about our clients using our photos willy-nilly on whatever website they want. My first reaction was "I have to find a way to control this". Then I got smart and realized that it would hurt me more to attempt to control and micromanage every aspect of the reproduction of our photography. It would cause me more time and stress than you could possibly imagine. I sure as hell don't want to police myspace and facebook looking for our photography to pop up at all hours of my already busy days. The bottom line is that times have changed. Digital is here. Photos are online, and LOTS of clients are technically savvy enough to know how to get digital copies. It's something that I have accepted. I would rather spend my time creating beautiful images.

Boda Bag Update

Hi everyone. I wanted to put up a couple images I took this past Saturday. Steve and I went to the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens to do some shooting, and we took along Steve's new Boda Dry. This was one of the first time we were able to use the bag in the field, and I have to say, I will be purchasing one for myself very soon. We were able to put all of our essential gear (lenses, CF cards, SB-800, lens and body caps, car keys, cell phone, etc…) very comfortably. Steve wore the bag for more than two hours straight, and was still very comfortable. This bag really does seem to be the perfect bridge between you and your big camera bag, especially on location shoots. I'm sure there will be more updates about the bag as we use it in different situations. Enjoy.

Photoshop World's Midnight Madness!

Chris and I have to admit, we were a little skeptical when we woke up at 6:15AM to get in line for Midnight Madness tickets; after all, we'd never been before. However, we can honestly say that it was well worth the early wake up call. We got to see some outtakes from the Photoshop World opening movie, and played an fun round of 1 versus 200 / Family Feud based on Photoshop questions. Of course, we can't show you too much of Midnight Madness, because you have to get up early if you wanna go! Plus, I don't think Chris and I had enough energy that late at night to hold the camera steady. :p

We also got a chance to briefly talk about what we did during the day while walking back. The night of Midnight Madness actually fell on the day with the most classes, so we were pretty tired when all was said and done. Totally worth it. It was a blast.

Here are a couple HDR images that Steve and I shot when we were down in Ft. Myers. These are the condos that we were staying in the weekend before we headed up to Orlando for Photoshop (Dude) World. I can't really decide which one I like better, so I'll include them both. Both were shot with a Nikon D200, 18-70mm Nikkor lens, supported by a Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod and ballhead. The final HDR image was created from 5 individual exposures, at one stop increments. Merged and edited with Adobe Photoshop CS3. Comments are always welcome : )

Chris and I got a chance to take in a quick class over at the Nikon Exhibition Theatre during the last day of the Tech Expo. Featured that afternoon was Joe McNally, one of the world's most renowned photographers. Joe has photographed around the world for National Geographic, Life Magazine, and countless other publications. He is known as a Nikon Legend, which is an honor bestowed upon the world's best shooters. VERY cool to hear him talk about his experiences, and to watch him demonstrate is mastery of light using the Nikon Creative Lighting System.

The Boda Bag

Chris and I were able to check out a very cool booth at the Tech Expo. Currently, we've been looking at Jessica Claire's ShootSac, to help us keep track of our equipment on location. We often place lenses in church pews, back rooms, etc... during weddings. This causes a loss in time because we have to look for everything we need. This new company, Boda, came up with the Boda Dry, a new type of lens pouch that allows the shooter to carry up to 3 lenses with them at all times. The bag is VERY comfortable to wear (although I'm not so sure after a full day of shooting). The product seemed to be exactly what we were looking for because it can be worn as belt, and thus less restrictive than a satchel strap. Here are some photos and a video of the bag:

Photoshop World's Pro Pass

NAPP allows you to register for Photoshop World in couple of different ways. There is a standard registration and a Pro Pass registration. Luckily, I picked up one of the last pro-pass registrations available. Unfortunately, Chris wasn't able to get one. (Which was a bummer)

The cool thing about a pro pass is that it gives you an extra conference workbook (well worth the cost of the conference alone) and a bunch of extras. Some of these extras include: an attache bag, note taking binder, pens, t-shirt, hat, etc...

The coolest thing about the Pro Pass is that you get a ticket to the Photoshop World Party, which is a great opportunity to network with the instructors you've been taking courses from all day. Here are some pictures from the party:

Steve and I have been looking at flash slideshow software for quite a while, and have come across Showit Web created by David Jay. Because we already have SlideShow Pro, there were a lot of questions that needed to be asked before we made the decision to add an additional piece of slideshow software to our arsenal. The most common was: "Why do we need another application?"

Showit Web added a missing piece that we couldn't have with SlideShow Pro, music. With Showit Web, we are able to add music and sync the picture transitions to the beat, or any sort of timing. We can use the license free music included, or we can add our own and time-sync it ourselves. Probably the other biggest selling point for us was the ease of use. With Showit Web, we are able to produce an awesome show in a very small amount of time. Attached is an example of what I did in 5 minutes with basement remodeling photographs that I have.

Chris and I finished the new web site design this past weekend and I thought that it would be cool to note some of the changes.

A Quick Look at HDR

Chris and I were working on some new portfolio additions this past weekend and we got started on a conversation about how specific photographers have a certain "look". Being a young company, we really had to think about how to describe what Kaufman Kramer photography's look is and what we want it to become. One area of photography that has been of great interest to Chris and myself is High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography. (A look we go for often) The concept of HDR is when we combine multiple exposures of the same photograph in order to bring out not only the midtones, but the highlights and shadows as well. I found this cool video online that shows a bunch of before and after HDR images. I think it does a good job of illustrating the concept.

Notice the detail recovery and how stylized an image can become once everything is properly exposed. Very cool stuff.

We needed a small, portable, on location lighting kit for this summer. I've been doing a lot of reading over on Strobist, and I finally broke down and purchased some equipment to use with our Speedlights. Steve and I did some testing today, and found the new equipment to be quite capable as an on location lighting setup. We are hoping to be able to use this setup for some upcoming outdoor weddings.

Night Shoot in Ann Arbor

Chris, Dave, and I decided that it might be fun to walk around downtown Ann Arbor and shoot some night photography. What we didn't know was that there would be a serious snowstorm rolling through the area at the time. Being that we would only have a limited time to shoot, we figured we'd make the best of the situation.

The shoot was a great opportunity to test out the Nikon's performance in wet and cold conditions. Remarkably, but not unexpected, the cameras performed flawlessly. The only difficulty was having to wipe the lens off constantly. We were able to walk around downtown Ann Arbor and capture some great architecture shots in addition to some cool time-lapse photography.

Cleaning the Gear

Hi everyone. I am sick, and its going to be a pretty chill weekend (as I try to get over what I have). I have been cleaning the apartment and straightening up, and I decided to pull out all of the gear and do a good cleaning. I really believe that if you take care of your gear, your gear will take care of you. After every shoot, I make it a point to sit down, and clean all of my gear. It keeps your camera equipment looking and feeling new for much longer. I have seen photographers who don't clean their gear pay for it later. Nobody wants to spend hours in photoshop cloning out a hair that was on the lens during all of the formals and outdoor shots. Trust me, ITS NOT FUN!!!

Along with just cleaning my gear, I also visually and mechanically inspect each critical piece of my kit. Just now I discovered that my eyepiece cover is broken, and I'll need to order a new one. An eyepiece cover might not be a critical element in your kits, but imagine if it was a switch on a lens that you don't find out about until the next wedding shoot! Not a good time to be discovering broken gear.

To clean my gear I use a couple different things. I begin by using two 100% cotton towels (one slightly damp with warm water, one to dry) and wiping down all of the gear. Don't be afraid to give it a good scrub, the cameras can (and should be able to) take it. Get all of that grease from your skin, nose, and forehead off of the camera body. And if you say you don't get all that stuff on your camera when you shoot, you aren't working hard enough : )

After all of the gear is wiped down, I turn my attention to the lenses. I use a product called OmniCleanz from Radtech.us as a lens cleaner. I've found that it works well for lenses and laptop screens. I use the LenSavrz cleaning cloth, also from Radtech.us. I can also highly reccomend the lens cleaning cloths that Promaster makes. They can be found at Ritz / Cord Camera stores, and they are extremely soft. They are also very good for cleaning your glasses off during a shoot (people who wear glasses when they shoot know what I am talking about...)

After everything is cleaned, all the gear is re-organized and put back in its proper place in my camera bag, so its ready to go for the next shoot. I love having everything in its place and ready to go, so I never have to worry about finding a piece of equipment when there is a time crunch.

Bottom line: clean your gear, it will last longer. Have a great weekend everyone.

New Lenses

Hi all. This past Saturday, Steve picked up our new lenses from Cord Camera in Columbus. We purchased a 70-200mm 2.8 VR and a 10.5 Fisheye. Both Nikkor lenses of course. We ended up testing them out at a local cemetary. We had a request from one of our friends for some photographs of Angels, so we took the opportunity to field test the lenses for the first time.

The All Digital Generation

As the photography industry grows and evolves, we are going to start to see a generation of photographers who have never shot film professionally. There are marked differences between shooting film and digital, and I often consider what long term changes we will see in our industry, both in the technology and shooting styles of tomorrow's photographers.

I think one change we are seeing is the general willingness to take more risks in difficult exposure situations. The ability to check your shots and see if they worked out is huge. If I can instantly know that what I shot worked out, I will be more inclined to go after the more difficult shots. In my opinion, this makes shooting much more fun : )

Another difference in shooting style we are seeing is the increased reliance on in-camera metering and exposure modes (Ap, Sp, Prog.) Being able to rely on the camera to figure out a lot of the difficult exposure calculations helps photographers to work much quicker, especially when incorporating one or two speedlights into the mix. If I can count on the camera to determine the exposure (not all the time mind you...) I can turn more of my focus to my subject and placing them in good lighting situations.

Shooting digital allows me to have many more freedoms as a photographer. I don't have to develop film, I don't have to bring tons of film to a shoot, and I don't have to worry about the film being destroyed. The less time I can spend worrying about the medium I use to create, the more time I can devote to the creation of the photographs that mean so much to our clients.

Digital is fast, versatile, and constantly changing. I think that one of the key factors to being successful in today's photography industry is to be able to keep up on the latest photography styles, techniques, and the latest technology.

P.S. - I still think film is awesome. It has a certain "look" that is very hard to replicate. I am going to try to do some personal work with film in the future, but professionally, digital is where it's at.

"Portrait Journalism"

I've often been asked what our "style" of photography is. Early on, we kicked around terms like "photo-journalistic", "portrait", "action", and "documentary", but we decided that none of these terms accurately reflected our style. We typically shoot with longer lenses to capture our clients' special day as it occurred. The question that many photographers struggle with is "how involved do I get" ?

We wound up having the opportunity to chat with Mike Colon on the Pictage forums the other night and asked him the same question. His response was:

"I've found that my best images are almost always when I gave no direction at all. I try to set myself up for success to capture a moment by finding a position which puts a great background behind my subject, getting my exposure/white balance right before hand, and anticipating the moment so I don't miss it. There are many times however, when I'll step in and adjust something or move my subject into better light if I feel the shot would be unusable without my intervention."

Mike makes a great point that Kaufman Kramer always strives to follow: Let the couple live the day, and only step in if the moment needs a little extra direction to happen. We have settled on using the term "portrait journalism" to best describe our style to our clients. We came across this term in a book written by Glen Johnson entitled "Digital Wedding Photography: Capturing Beautiful Memories".

Johnson defines portrait journalism as follows:

"...this style produces portrait images that range from traditional to ultramodern to fine art and anything in between."

It's a very informative book, and we highly reccomend giving it a read.

The idea is for our photographers to stay behind the scenes as much as possible and just let the day happen naturally. It can be hard as a photographer to resist the temptation of constantly giving direction, but trust us; the results of going with the flow yield far better photographs at the end of the day.

Quality of Light

I talk about this all the time. In my opinion, having a quality of light is critical to producing a good image. Often times when we are shooting outside, and we are faced with direct sunlight and harsh shadows. Of course we always hope for slightly overcast days, but often times Mother Nature decides to challenge us with direct sunlight : )

To deal with shooting in direct sunlight, we always bring along our handy diffusion panels. On engagement sesslons we bring two panels, one small round panel, and a larger (larger is an understatement) square panel. By positioning these panels to essentially shade our subjects, we can achieve studio quality lighting in an otherwise harsh situation.

Here is an excellent example. In this shot we decided to selectivley diffuse the light hitting Mike and Lia. We liked the harsh contrasting lines in the background, and decided to use them as a compositional element in the photo.

Lightsphere

When we first started shooting weddings, we quickly found out that we needed some sort of light modifier for our speedlights. After researching several options, we came across Gary Fong's lightsphere. I have to say that I am pleased with this product. The lightsphere actually produces the results that are advertised, which is more than I can say for other products that I have tried. We've been using the lightsphere for a while, and we will continue to until we find something better.

Note: We haven't tried Gary Fong's new Whaletail yet, so when we get our hands on one, I'll be sure to put our thoughts on the blog.

iChat video chat

Last night we finally got a video conference going using iChat. We have been trying to set this up for a while. Video conferences allow us to conduct business meetngs whenever we need to, and because I live in Ann Arbor, doing this helps me stay more connected to the business.

We were sitting around one day and thought it might be kinda cool to document how 3 young entrepreneurs handle a growing business. It certainly has been an interesting journey thus far. Who knew that you couldn't learn everything there is to know about business from a college class or book? (wink)
